Located across from the Columbus Monument at the harbor is the historic building of Drassanes, the royal shipyard of Barcelona. The construction of this spectacular Gothic building covering an impressive 205,000 square feet dates back to the 13th century. It is one of the few examples of this kind of medieval architecture in the world. Thanks to the functional design of the vaulted halls, 30 galleys could be built at the same time. This helped the Crown of Aragón become one of the most important military and trade powers in the Mediterranean.
