Because it’s such a huge tourist site, many people fail to appreciate the beauty and significance of the Hackesche Höfe complex. These unique courtyards and their history are well worth a second look. Two world wars had a huge impact on the flourishing cultural life here. Confiscated, repurposed, and neglected after 1945, they were restored to new glory in the mid-1990s thanks in large part to their tenants and a great deal of initiative.
