Designed by Karl von Fischer and built between 1811 and 1818, the Royal Court and National Theater was commissioned by King Maximilian I Joseph. Even though he envisioned it as a venue for all social classes, the architecture reminiscent of a Greek temple is distinctly feudal. Severely damaged twice by fire and almost completely destroyed in WW II, the magnificent theater is one of the world’s leading opera houses and home to the Bavarian State Ballet.
