Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue of EMBT were behind the renovation of the Santa Caterina market in the historic city center. They designed an exemplary support structure. Three projecting sheets of metal, two concrete support beams, and 109 sheets of wood in different shapes form the new wave-shaped roof. Its surface—over 45,200 sq. ft.—is covered with bright, hexagonal ceramic tiles. Open kitchens and informal counters integrate the restaurant Cuines Santa Catarina into the market stalls.
