1978 saw the beginning of the reconstruction of this landmarked, Neorenaissance-style building with its central atrium. A former museum of applied arts that suffered extensive damage during World War II, today the Martin-Gropius-Bau hosts 15 to 20 temporary exhibits annually from a variety of fields including art, photography, archeology, and artist retrospectives. A bookstore, conference room, cinema hall, and the Gropius restaurant complete the overall picture.
