In 2003, Italian architect Gae Aulenti pulled down interior walls from the city’s old Beaux Arts library building to create this open, dramatic space for one of the largest collections of historic Asian art in the world, from Chinese calligraphy to Malay daggers to Persian miniatures. Yet the real highlight may be the frequent programs and performances, including Balinese concerts and Zen meditation lessons. The elegant, minimalist Japanese Tea Ceremony is highly recommended.
