Local before arrival
This is the location of the first scene in Steven Spielberg’s legendary “Empire of the Sun.” Like so many buildings, the Roman-Catholic Xujiahui Cathedral reveals a lot about the lively cultural and Catholic history of the city. It was built by Jesuits between 1905 and 1910. Mass still takes place here every week. The stained-glass windows with Chinese motifs were installed during the most recent restoration.
