During the Third Reich, this was the site of premises shared by Gestapo Headquarters, the SS High Command, and the Reich Security Main Office—the main proponents of Nazi terror. Today, only cellar walls remain. After years of controversy around the original design by Peter Zumthor, the 8,600-square-foot exhibition and documentation center, which was designed by Ursula Wilms and also houses the foundation and a library, finally opened in 2010.
