Designed by star architect Zaha Hadid, the long-awaited National Museum of 21st Century Arts—“MAXXI” in short—opened in May of 2010 after a decade of construction. Built on the site of a former military installation, this structure of concrete and glass is as dynamic on the outside as it is on the inside, where suspended corridors and stairs connect the various exhibition areas. In addition to art, the museum also puts on exhibitions focusing on 20th century architecture.
