The 1911 construction of the Palazzo delle Belle Arti on the edge of the Villa Borghese celebrated the 50th anniversary of the unification of Italy. Several years later, works from some of the greatest painters and sculptors of the 19th and 20th centuries were moved into the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, among them the sculpture “Hercules and Lica” by Antonio Canova. The gallery also exhibits paintings from international artists such as Mondrian, Courbet, Van Gogh, Cézanne, Monet, Klee and Pollock.
