Though it’s officially called Tiefwerder, the countryside around the Havel River in Berlin's Spandau district has a grand-sounding nickname. But this lovely area, with its waterways and picturesque lakes, fully deserves its sobriquet. Boat rentals such as Der Bootsladen (The Boat Shop) hire out canoes, kayaks, and everything else you need to explore these enchanting Havel inlets. With a bit of luck, you will have a chirpy escort of ducks accompanying your boat through the green labyrinth of canals. With each paddle stroke, you’ll move further away from the big city life.
