It’s easy to imagine 16th century sailors boozing away the evenings here: The pub features dark wood, Rembrandt prints, curiosities lining the walls, dim lighting, and a dizzyingly steep staircase. As the story goes, anyone who ran into debt with the innkeeper would pay in a rather exotic currency the next time they visited—with monkeys, a popular attraction at the time as well as the pub’s namesake. Still preserved from tourist hoards and would-be socialites, which certainly lends this place its charm.
