Local before arrival
Waterlooplein hosts what is perhaps the best-known flea market in the city, a tradition that can be traced back to the 19th century. Visitors looking for bargains can rummage through art and kitsch as well as new, used, contemporary, and old fashioned items. There are no set prices, and haggling is expected. The flea market shares the square with the Stopera, a building complex that houses the town hall with the Amsterdam Ordnance Datum and the city’s opera house.
