This center for modern art, designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, opened in 1977. Building elements such as a steel frame, escalators, and heating pipes were placed on the exterior, creating a pivotal work of postmodern architecture. In addition to Europe’s largest collection of the masters of fauvism, cubism, surrealism, and pop art, the Centre Pompidou stages film, theater, design, and architecture events as well as temporary exhibtions.
