The 41 floor high Swiss Re Tower was London’s first eco high-rise, and with its cigar-like form it has been an eye-catching feature of the skyline since day one. The entirely glass façade ensures that plenty of daylight gets through, while atriums serve as meeting places and a sophisticated ventilation system, together with other features, succeed in considerably reducing energy consumption compared to other buildings of a similar size. For this innovative design Foster + Partners were awarded the Stirling Prize in 2004.
