The Speicherstadt, a labyrinth of warehouses, was built in the 19th century on 64 acres. So-called “quarter masters” took over the inspection and storage of valuable goods like tea, coffee, or tobacco that importers brought to Hamburg. The Speicherstadt has been under governmental protection since 1991. Visitors to the museum can learn more about about life during former times from a multitude of historic exhibits in a storage building built in 1888.
