Palais Pannwitz could supply enough material for an entire television series: At the end of World War II, for example, a quick-witted housekeeper saved the house from being looted by Soviet troops when she quickly raised the flag of Yugoslavia—an allied country—in the garden. After a great deal of back and forth over the years, Karl Lagerfeld helped restore the villa to new glory in the style of the Italian Renaissance in the 1990s. The elegant rooms and suites, as well as the sumptuous public areas, each provides a welcome respite from the excitement of the city.
