Immediately after Ignatius was canonized by Pope Gregor XV, the Jesuits chose a beautiful location to build the baroque church Sant’Ignazio as a tribute to the founder of the Jesuit Order. A ceiling fresco portraying Ignatius’ being welcomed into paradise is a masterpiece of perspective painting by Andrea Pozzo, who seems to have transcended the boundaries between painting, stucco, and architecture. You can best experience this illusion by standing on the marble plate set into the floor.
