In the 18th century, the oldest profession (and least desired within the city) began to establish itself in this area, which was outside of Hamburg’s gates at that time. Even today, the Reeperbahn with the neighboring Herbertstraße and Großer Freiheit, lit at night by lurid illuminated advertising, is the most famous pleasure quarter in Germany. Many popular pubs, bars, and clubs are found here next to the respective establishments.
