The Quartiere Coppedè, built in the 1920s, is best entered through the monumental arch between the embassy palaces, quintessential examples of the eclectic style of architect Gino Coppedè. He juxtaposed shapes and styles—Gothic, Baroque, Renaissance with symbols from many parts of the world, including Babylon, Vienna and his Tuscan home. Coppedè was famous for his sense of irony, apparent in the way he mixed these disparate elements.
