Local before arrival
The Pantheon, dedicated in 27 BC and rebuilt 150 years later after a huge fire, is considered to be the best preserved building from antiquity. Large bronze doors open to the round interior of the church where painter Raphael, King Victor Emanuel II and other dignitaries are buried. The circular opening, 30 ft. wide, in the center of the coffered dome, which was once gilded, allows light and rain into the interior.
