By the beginning of the 2nd century, Rome needed a new commerce area in addition to the Roman Forum; this was the impetus for the multilevel Trajan’s Market, designed by architect Apollodorus. Tradespeople advertised their wares in 150 shops, selling flowers, wine, fruit, vegetables, spices, and other products. Today Trajan’s Market houses the Museum of the Imperial Forums with over 170 original marble fragments of the imperial forums as well as a few limestone casts.
