Local before arrival
Name another big city where you can swim in the river without worrying about water quality. The Isar—without which there would be no Munich—is a blessing especially in summer. It contributes a large helping of Mediterranean-style easiness despite being quintessentially Bavarian (though, strictly speaking, its source is in Austria). It’s especially nice if you cycle, walk, or jog upstream towards Flaucher and the zoo. For a little more action, try rafting from Wolfratshausen to Thalkirchen.
