A magical place with special charm: the Plague Cemetery. That’s what Duke Albrecht V ordered built beyond the gates of the city in 1563. No one has been buried in the old cemetery with the coffin-shaped outline since 1944. Many prominent residents of Munich are buried here, including Leo von Klenze, Friedrich von Gärtner, and Carl Spitzweg. Weathered and overgrown in places, the graves are hauntingly beautiful, historically interesting, and often entertaining.
