Local before arrival
Within a very short time, the Münchner Freiheit U-Bahn station has gone from being a somewhat dingy public transportation hub to a showroom of modern architecture. While the U-Bahn area is looking spiffy thanks to Ingo Maurer’s lighting concept, the above-ground stop, opened in 2009, rises into the sky like a modern-day cathedral. Designed by OX2architekten, the flowing steel construction consists of 18 open columns and a 440-ton domed roof with slits.
