Tucked away not far from the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is the early medieval church of Santa Prassede, dedicated to a senator’s daughter believed to have given shelter to the Apostle Peter. The church contains significant works of early Christian and medieval art. Be sure to have a look at the amazing mosaics covering the apse, the triumphal arch, and the Chapel of St. Zeno. Described at the time as the “gardens of paradise,” these shimmering gold mosaics are Rome’s most important Byzantine monument.
