Since 1984, jeweler Cartier has been a sponsor of international avant-garde art. The Foundation, first proposed by sculptor César, resides in a glass building designed by Jean Nouvel, which was completed in 1994. It dematerializes its architecture and eliminates the boundaries between interior and exterior. Exhibitions focus on contemporary paintings, photography, sculptures, pop culture, and video art, and show not only stars like Matthew Barney but also emerging artists.
