The Baths of Caracalla, a square complex 1082 ft. in length and width and large enough for 1,500 guests, were not just public bathing facilities but also an important center of social life. In addition to soaking in warm and cold water, many leisure activities awaited visitors starting in the year 216 AD: reading, listening to talks, playing sports, exercising, or going for walks. Today, opera performances and concerts are held in the summer in front of this spectacular backdrop.
