Local before arrival
Long before Tate Modern was opened up in 2000, electricity was being produced here. Architects Herzog & de Meuron managed to conserve the industrial charm of this former power station in their renovation – the turbine hall shows spectacular, site-specific installations whilst the boiler house contains the galleries themselves. In the glass penthouse with its café, visitors are privy to a breathtaking view of the city opening out in front of them.
