During the California gold rush, thousands landed at these piers in pursuit of wealth, fortune, and happiness. Today, 150 years later, one of the city’s most beautiful promenades spans right along the piers that extend far out into the picturesque bay. Pier 1, today offices for the Port of San Francisco, sits right next to the huge market halls. An architectural adventure from 1918, the building is made of steal and glass, and features a history wall that chronicles the life of the city and its port.
