One of the birthplaces of Samba, Pedra do Sal is a historic and well-nigh religious place for many. The Afro-Brazilian culture has left its mark in the docklands—this is where the slave ships ended their routes, and where the haggling for the human goods began. After the abolishment of slavery, a significant Afro-Brazilian community established itself here. The strong relationship to Bahia is apparent in the cultural heritage celebrated every Monday: Cariocas and visitors alike can be found dancing and singing away their differences in the middle of the street.
