Local before arrival
Located directly on the pier of Karaköy, this converted warehouse has become a magnet for the galleries, cafés, restaurants, and shops that are settling in the neighborhood. Since 2004, Istanbul Modern has housed a collection of contemporary Turkish art as well as a changing exhibition of international artists in its 86,000 sq. ft. of floor space. If you are traveling with a cultural Grinch, you can park him or her in the museum’s restaurant without feeling bad: The view alone is worth a visit.
