Local before arrival
São Paulo is the city with the largest Japanese population outside Japan. The exact reasons are unclear—of all the ports in South America, most Japanese immigrants arrived in Lima. Around 600,000 Japanese have made this neighborhood their own, with typically Japanese gardens and temples, and streets decorated with lanterns. Now in its fifth generation, the Japanese community is truly a part of Brazil.
