Created by Chilean-born artist Jorge Selarón, these steps have become the most internationally recognized landmark in Rio after Christ the Redeemer. By covering the 215 steps in front of his house with over 2,000 brightly colored tiles from all over the world, Selarón has created an art piece that attests to Brazil’s cultural diversity. To finance his project, he sold each and every piece of his own paintings over a decade. Until his death in January 2013, he was seen almost daily on his beloved steps.
