The Globe Theatre, opened in 1997, is a faithful reconstruction of the Elizabethan playhouse of the same name that stood by the banks of the Thames in Shakespeare’s day. Back then, many of the Bard’s most famous works were performed there – and they continue to be today during the theatre’s summer season. Performances are just as they would have been – the audiences stand up, there are no stage lights and no mics, and there’s plenty of interaction with the crowd. Just don’t pack your rotten tomatoes!
