Ever since its glamorous opening in 1869, the Wiener Staatsoper, a splendid example of neorenaissance architecture, has been one of the most important opera houses in the world, and has launched more than a few successful careers. In between every September and June, 60 operas and ballets feature in more than 300 performances. Star conductors preside over the excellent orchestra, whose members are drawn from the Vienna Philharmonic.
