When it opened in 1901, this Jugendstil public bath designed by Carl Hocheder was the most modern and luxurious facility of its kind in Europe. Wealthy building contractor Karl Müller intended it to be a gift to “people without means” who would be able to enjoy the Roman-Irish steam bath and the two beautiful indoor pools. Richly decorated with many bronze figurines, murals, and neobaroque elements, the Volksbad continues to be a precious gift.
