The 175,000-sq.-ft. New Academic Building of the Cooper Union School is as technologically advanced and innovative as the free and accessible education in art, architecture, and engineering the 150-year-old institution is known for. This soaring nine-story futuristic structure, designed by Thom Mayne of Morphosis with Gruzen Samton, has unexpected architectural elements such as a Grand Atrium the full height of the building. It is also the first LEED-certified academic laboratory building in New York.
