Before the summer of 2009, the pocket of land near Moritzplatz, in lively Kreuzberg, was a giant, 65,000-square-foot abandoned industrial site. Committed neighbors have turned the bleak abandoned area into a mobile, blooming oasis by planting vegetables, herbs, and flowers in recycled baker’s boxes, rice bags, and Tetra Paks and on pallets. Passionate gardeners and laypeople, young and old, dig in the dirt while visitors bustle around them—an idyllic commotion. Locals and businesspeople like to spend their breaks in the garden café, and enjoy their lunch, made of freshly harvested ingredients, under the treetops and blue sky. In the summer, a popular flea market takes place here every second Sunday.
