PORTUGAL TRAVEL COOKBOOK – NELSON CARVALHEIRO

Nelson Carvalheiro grew up with his grandparents in a small farming village of central Portugal and soon learned to value the “Portuguese Gastronomical heritage”

People, Travel and Food are the reasons why Nelson decided to hit the road, and fundamental what led him to trade the world of luxury hospitality for a pen, some paper and a camera.

He is a firm believer in cultural identity through gastronomy. He constantly seeks little and intimate details, as he believes they are a destination’s culture in its raw state.

At the start of 2014, a mere 6 months after founding his blog, he is declared FITUR’s European Travel Blogger. In 2015 he wins the 2015 World FITUR Travel Blogger. He writes in English to the world, showcasing Portugal as his identity and a brand which he takes with him wherever he travels.

He fell in love in a trip to Germany and now Berlin is his home.

“The Portuguese Travel Cookbook”, is his most recent project in partnership with APTECE. It is his way to pay tribute to the true bastions of Traditional Portuguese Cuisine, who make it their daily mission to give life through food to the greatest from of Portuguese Identity.

The book is a journey through Portugal. A country proud of its culinary identity and heritage, featuring stories about the food, the places, the eateries, the villages, the producers, the fishermen, the farmers and the chefs who dedicate their life and their day to make traditional Portuguese cuisine the everyday wonder that it is. The main objective in conceiving, writing and photographing this book was to make people hungry and inspire a future journey to Portugal.

To make the reader dream and imagine how the different dishes must taste like, what their texture is, how the ingredients are cooked and who cooks them. Because he believes that the culinary heart of Portugal is away from the big cities, his project focuses only on the peripheral Portugal.

The Portugal that produces its own vegetables, milk and still cooks the way his grandmother taught him. A culinary Portugal that finds its origins in the nets of the fishermen, in the wood-fired oven, in the hoe of the farmer and in the local eateries not listed in any guide

Almost half of the book's pages are photos, as it was his wish to make this book as graphic as possible, leaving the reader with a visual note to the story they are reading. It features more than 50 Traditional recipes, so the readers can cook them at home and make full use of the book in the kitchen and not just leaving it on the shelf.
