MUNICH’S NEW ACCOMMODATION FOR THE CREATIVE SCENE

MUNICH

The newest to join the ranks of Munich’s swanky list of accommodations is redefining what it means to be a cool hotel. The Flushing Meadows Hotel and Bar, in the heart of Munich’s trendy Glockenbachviertel, seamlessly merges individual interior concepts and design across 16 rooms. And because those behind the hotel are three of the coolest guys in the city, you can be rest-assured that your stay will be anything but dull.

The brainchild of local architects Sascha Arnold and Steffen Werner and their long-time partner, gastronomist Niels Jäger, Flushing Meadows—a member of Design Hotels—is a perfect representation of these guys’ sense for the city’s latest trends. With their extensive list of contacts as some of the biggest scene makers in town, the three have created a veritable meeting point for creative travelers and the local elite.

Behind the original façade of a former post office built in the 1970s, Arnold/Werner have created a 16-room retreat named for the fields surrounding Munich and the scenic Isar River. Eleven loft studios were individually designed in collaboration with prominent creative types from around the world, all housed in the third floor of the hotel. Boasting 13-foot-high ceilings, these light-flooded rooms are modern and urban, with exposed concrete and eclectic Scandinavian furnishings. The remaining five penthouse studios and the Flushing Meadows Bar in the top floor were designed by Arnold/Werner, each offering stunning views over the rooftops of the city. Three of the studios offer a private terrace with superlative views of the Alps. Equipped with features like solid-wood paneling covered with fabrics by the Danish design firm Kvadrat, copper fixtures, and paintings by the Berlin-based artist Maximilian Rödel, the rooms are characterized by their individualism.

The party gets going in the top-floor Flushing Meadows Bar, where chef Manu Pinciroli creates an eclectic mix of cocktails and small bites. The highlight: the rooftop terrace with views extending all the way to the Zugspitze.

On the ground floor, guests can detox the morning after at Super Danke!, offering a selection of green smoothies and cold-pressed juices. After nursing your hangover, head over to stilrad to get a free bike rental (exclusive to hotel guests) and explore the nearby restaurants, bars, shops, and galleries that the Glockenbachviertel has to offer.
